Peter Gammons tweeted on Tuesday that the Rays could be a surprise contender for Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee.

Tampa Bay could send outfielder B.J. Upton to Seattle in a three-way deal prior to the July 31 non-wavier trade deadline.

"Rumblings around St. Pete ballpark was a BJ Upton-Cliff Lee deal. 3-way?" Gammons wrote on his Twitter page.
