The Nationals signed first baseman Nick Johnson to a three-year, $16.5 million extension on Saturday morning. Johnson was scheduled to become a free agent in after the 2006 season and will earn $3.2 million, plus incentives this year.

If Johnson is traded prior to the 2008 season, the last year of the deal becomes a player option.
