The Cardinals on Thursday placed right-handed pitcher Kyle Lohse on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 23, with a right forearm strain. The club also purchased the contract of right-hander Fernado Salas from Triple-A Memphis to take Lohse's spot on the roster. Lohse experienced soreness in his last start on May 22 and has been shut down since. An MRI examination revealed inflammation in the arm, but no structural damage. After further testing with a hand and wrist specialist at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic, Lohse's condition remained uncertain, and with his rotation spot coming up on Saturday, the team made the move to add another pitcher while a long-term decision about Lohse is made. A report that surgery is the likely outcome for Lohse was published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday
