Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to skip Javier Vazquez's turn in the rotation, giving him nine days off after his best outing of the season.

Vazquez pitched seven innings of two-run ball against the Tigers, but the Yankees won't start him until Friday against the Mets.

"I know Javy wants to pitch but that was we thought was the right decision at this time," Girardi said. "You can always look for rhymes and reasons for things and sometimes there just isn't any."

Sergio Mitre will start in Vazquez's place against the Twins on Sunday afternoon.

"We took everything into account," Girardi said. "There were a lot of internal discussions and what we came up with is that this is the best thing for our club right now."

For the second straight series, however, it appears as though the Yankees are keeping Vazquez from pitching against the Red Sox, who they'll face on Monday and Tuesday.
