Ken Griffey Jr., who was not in the Mariners' starting lineup for the third consecutive game against an opposing right-handed pitcher on Friday night, says he is not contemplating retirement. "I haven't gotten to that point," he said after taking early batting practice at Tropicana Field. "What would it take? I don't know. I haven't thought about anything but coming here and getting ready for a game." Griffey has been in the middle of a firestorm since Monday after a story in the (Tacoma) News Tribune quoted two unnamed teammates as saying the Mariners icon was sleeping in the clubhouse during a recent game against the Angels at Safeco Field and therefore was unavailable to pinch-hit for Rob Johnson in the eighth inning. |
