Jose Iglesias has transitioned from Cuba to the minor leagues seamlessly.

"He's unbelievable," Portland manager Arnie Beyeler said of his shortstop. "He does have a lot pressure and all that baggage coming in here. He's worked hard, got a lot of energy and does a good job. He's pretty smart with things, he takes care of himself.

"And he's been here six months," Beyeler added. "It's unbelievable."

Iglesias continued to impress Tuesday when he went 3-for-5 with a triple and a career-high five RBIs in Double-A Portland's 7-2 victory over Binghamton.

Iglesias' big night came one day after he went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI against the Mets. The Cuban defector has 16 hits and six RBIs in his last nine starts for the Sea Dogs.

Beyeler, a former Minor Leaguer himself, said the 20-year-old has taken advantage of timely opportunities.

"He's been pretty fortunate to get situations with runners on base," Beyeler said. "He's running hard, he's been working with our hitting coach [Dave Joppie], he's very aggressive at the plate."

Igelsias lined a two-run triple in the first inning Tuesday, a two-RBI single in the fifth and led off the seventh with a base hit. He's got seven hits in his last two days.

"He's learning the strike zone and getting more disciplined, so it's starting to pay off for him," Beyeler said. "He's laying off tough pitches and hitting the ball hard, so things have been falling in for him."

The infielder is batting .323 this season with 15 runs scored, six RBIs and a steal in 25 games.
