Because of a sore back that slowed him at the start of camp and put him in a steady mode of catch-up, Daisuke Matsuzaka made his Spring debut on Thursday. Matsuzaka gave up two hits and one run over two frames, issuing no walks or strikeouts in a 25-pitch performance.

"I thought he was really good," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "He threw strikes. Again, he continues to get ready. I thought he did good. I thought he got real tired at the end, which again is OK. Six ups and downs is a lot."
