Twins closer Joe Nathan will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Friday in New York, according to a source.

The surgery will be performed by the Mets' team physician, Dr. David Altchek.

Nathan, who felt discomfort in his elbow during a March 6 outing, made the decision to have surgery after playing catch with Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson for 10 minutes on Sunday.
