Madison Bumgarner didn't crack 90 mph while walking four of the 11 batters he faced in a 6-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Bumgarner remains the top choice among Giants officials to open the season as the No. 5 starter, but non-roster right-hander Todd Wellemeyer would be well-served to toss a strong outing today against the Colorado Rockies in Tucson. "I'll say this: We're staying open-minded," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Bumgarner was clocked at 94 mph last spring, when he struck out the Dodgers' Manny Ramirez. But his velocity dropped into the high 80s by June, and he hasn't recaptured the crackle on his fastball this spring. He threw a couple of 85 mph fastballs in his final inning. "I'm not sure if he got tired," Bochy said. "He started winging away. He'd worked hard out there. You'll see these guys get stretched out and get their stamina." Catcher Bengie Molina said Bumgarner was striding too far toward first base. "I think he'll be fine, I really do," Molina said. "They'll look at the video and get him through."
