Nomar Garciaparra's one-day contract in order to retire with Boston needed to undergo some convincing of CEO Larry Lucchino in order for it to materialize. ?Larry didn?t want to do it,? said a source. ?He had to be convinced, and eventually John Henry just told him to man up.? But Red Sox spokesperson Susan Goodenow insisted there was no truth to the Garciaparra gossip. ?In the first meeting on the subject, there was unanimous agreement among John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein to do the deal that was announced today,? she said. Lucchino still had some lingering resentments that dated back to the trade and that he viewed it as the beginning of the rift that eventually developed between him and Epstein, his former protegee. ?I always saw myself retiring in a Red Sox uniform,? Garciaparra said. ?Today I am honored to live that dream thanks to Mr. Henry, Mr. Werner, Mr. Lucchino, Theo and this wonderful organization.? |
