Jon Lester concerned about the health of Tampa Bay starter David Price, who left in the second inning when a piece of Adrian Beltre?s shattered bat struck him on the right hand. ?Any time you step on the field, you?re in danger of something hitting you, whether it be the ball or the bat,?? Lester said. ?It?s part of the game. It kind of [stinks] that baseball hasn?t really done a very good job with the maple bats. It seems like they tried to do something last year and they?re just not getting the results. ?They?re a danger to the game, they?re a danger to all the players and fans. Hopefully we can eventually do something with those bats.?? Baseball started an investigation into the use of maple bats last season but has not outlawed them. ?Hitters like them,?? said Lester. ?Until you get a serious injury from one, I don?t think they?re really going to change. I don?t know what we can do to make them safer. There are just too many dangers. Ash doesn?t shatter like that. We need to figure out a way to make them a little bit stronger.?? Said Rays manager Joe Maddon, ?If we?re going to wait for someone to actually get killed or impaled, we?re going to wait way too long. Something has to be done.?? |
