The Mets signed reliever Kiko Calero to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Thursday. Manager Jerry Manuel said he isn't very familiar with the veteran right-hander just yet, but the hope is that he can develop into an option to pitch the seventh or eighth inning out of the bullpen for the club. Considering the solid season Calero had in 2009, it's the type of low-risk, high-reward signing the Mets needed for a relief corps that's already hurting. "He had a very good year last year, and to be able to bring a guy like that on a Minor League deal to potentially compete in our bullpen, I think it's a good sign," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "That's going to be up to Jerry as far as how they decide [where Calero is deployed], but he's definitely going to be a guy that is going to be in the mix for the bullpen."
