By the time Barry Bonds first played a game for the San Francisco Giants last year, they were 14 games under .500, having wasted away most of the season.

Bonds' return provided a boost that gave the Giants a flicker of hope in the woeful NL West but it wasn't enough to lift San Francisco into the playoffs. Last season's struggles taught manager Felipe Alou a lesson.

"I found out that it's a lot easier to manage when Barry Bonds is in the lineup every day," Alou said.

Alou knows he can't count on Bonds to be the everyday player he was a few years ago, when he was setting record and terrorizing opponents. His biggest concern will be making sure he gets Bonds enough rest so he can make it through the long season.
