Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is once again ready to enter spring training in a battle for an outfielder position.

"I don't see why not," Gardner said. "We don't have many guys. Last year, it seemed like we had 10 outfielders; now we only have a couple."

As it currently stands, the Yankees have Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Randy Winn and Gardner competing for time in the outfield.

New York has expressed confidence in Gardner this winter based on moves that don't directly relate to the young speedster. They traded Melky Cabrera and prospect Austin Jackson and don't appear likely to bring Johnny Damon back.

"You never know," Gardner said. "I kind of keep track of it because I'm interested in what they're doing, but as far as where I think I'll be playing or what the plans are, I haven't talked to anyone about it. No one has called and offered me any information, and I haven't thought a lot about it."
