The Cubs and free-agent outfielder Jermaine Dye have engaged in preliminary talks, according to sources.

Dye would likely have to agree to a backup role.

The Cubs would play Dye at first base at times and the organization is comfortable with him becoming an everyday option if one of their starters suffers an injury.
