A proposed new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx might cost New York taxpayers almost $500 million in subsidies and lost tax revenue, a nonprofit group said. The report by Good Jobs New York, a labor-backed research group that is critical of state funding of private development, also accused city and state political leaders of not adequately publicizing meetings that are held on the stadium plan, and called for greater public access to the negotiations. "This has been a closed-door process," said Bettina Damiani, the director of Good Jobs New York, at a Manhattan press briefing. "The community has not had a seat at the table." Damiani cited community objection to the bulldozing of 22 acres of public parks as part of the plan. Yankees officials have said the team will pay the $800 million construction cost of the stadium. But the American League team won't be required to pay rent, property taxes, mortgage-recording taxes, or sales tax on construction materials, the report said. |
