The four-year, $39 million contract extension that the Marlins gave pitcher Josh Johnson isn't likely to open the floodgates to more spending.

Major League Baseball has asked Florida to increase their payroll for the coming seasons, but the Marlins now have a pair of players (Johnson and Hanley Ramirez) set to earn a combined $29.25 million in 2013.

Florida will likely avoid multi-year deals until then, writes the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
