Beltre has played against Mike Lowell, who he will replace, since the pair were in the minor leagues. "I know Mike Lowell," he said after his introductory press conference. "I'm a huge fan of Mike Lowell. Mike is a great guy." Beltre understands what Lowell is going through physically as he recovers from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. "I went through the same thing he's going through now," the former Mariner said. "I had the same surgery he had." Beltre said the decision to sign with the Red Sox was an easy one, but Lowell entered his thinking as he contemplated his decision. "I was talking to my wife [Sandra] about this because I felt bad," Beltre said. "I knew this was the best thing to do, but I really thought about it hard. When Theo told me that even though Mike didn't get traded, he wasn't going to play third base, that [Kevin] Youkilis was going to play third, that made my decision easier. "But I thought about it hard because I have great respect for Mike." |
