The proposed trade between the Red Sox and Rangers that would send third baseman Mike Lowell to Texas is off.

Lowell has a torn radial collateral ligament in his right thumb and will have surgery after Christmas, which caused the Rangers to back out of the deal.

The recovery time for the surgery is six to eight weeks.
