Casey Kelly has decided to pitch full time and the Red Sox could put him on the fast track to the majors.

The 20-year-old righthander, who spent half of last season playing shortstop, informed the team last week that he would devote himself to pitching, and could start next season in the rotation for Double A Portland.

?Having Casey fully invested in what is happening was of significant importance,?? said director of player development Mike Hazen. ?Based on what we saw, we feel very comfortable he?ll have a pretty good shot of competing for that Portland roster spot.??

Kelly was 7-5 with a 2.08 ERA last season. The former first-round pick met with Hazen, Epstein, and one of his minor league managers, Gary DiSarcina, to discuss his situation earlier this month.

?I sat down, put the emotion aside, and asked myself what my main goal was in baseball, and that was to make it to the big leagues,?? Kelly said. ?Pitching will get me there faster and I can have a longer career.??
