Mariners bullpen coach John Wetteland was hospitalized Thursday for what officials called mental health issues, according to an Sporting News report.

According to the Denton County sheriff?s office, a woman from Wetteland?s Texas house called to report a possibly suicidal person.

"She said he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide," Sgt. Roger Griggs said.

Wetteland retired in 2000 after a 12-year career. He was named the 1996 World Series MVP while serving as the closer for the Yankees.
