The Padres have hired Jed Hoyer away from the Red Sox to become their new general manager, sources told ESPN.

Hoyer and the Padres had been in serious discussions for several days and finalized the agreement Saturday.

An official announcement is expected to come on Monday.

Hoyer has been an assistant general manager in Boston since 2003.
