The Cincinnati Reds avoided arbitration with Javier Valentin by signing the catcher to a one-year contract Sunday.

No contract terms were released, but the switch-hitter made $450,000 last season.

Valentin is coming off the best season of his seven-year career. He established career highs in batting (.281), home runs (14) and RBI (50). He added 11 doubles and walked 30 times for an on-base percentage of .362 in 76 games.

Valentin formed one-half of a potent catching tandem with Jason LaRue. The duo combined to hit .268 with 28 homers and 110 RBI.
