The Opsera is a statistic I created in order to rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine a team's Opsera, I take their OPS, move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract the team's ERA from that number. * Winning team in bold Yankees Vs. Angels New York finished second during the 2009 regular season in Opesra with a per game average of 4.13, while the Angels were ranked tenth with an average of 3.47. Game 1 - Yankees: 6.53 - Angels: 1.18 The Yankees had a .753 OPS at the plate compared to .343 for the Angels. Only two of the four runs given up the Angels were earned over eight innings of work. Dodgers Vs. Phillies The Dodgers finished 2009 ranked first in Opsera with an average of 4.17, while Philadelphia was ranked sixth with 3.65. Game 1 - Phillies: 2.44 - Dodgers: 1.59 The Dodgers outhit Philadelphia in Game 1, with an OPS of .959 compared to .844, but were a striking 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position, compared to a tidy 3-for-5 for the Phillies. Game 2 - Dodgers: 2.54 - Phillies: 2.51 Pedro Martinez and Vicente Padilla nearly matched each other inning for inning, but the five-pitcher eighth inning let the Dodgers sneak in the game-tying and game-winning runs. Before the series started, I identified Andre Ethier as the key offensive player for the Dodgers given his career struggles against lefties. Ethier had a .944 OPS through the first two games, including the game-winning RBI on Friday, which came on a walk. James Loney and Russell Martin have also been excellent with OPS' of 1.357 and 1.238. Manny Ramirez is 1-for-9 with his lone hit coming on the no-doubter homer in Game 1.
