The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are looking to the Far East for pitching depth. The Devil Rays on Wednesday signed Japanese righthander Shinji Mori to a two-year contract. Financial terms for the deal, which also includes club options for 2008 and 2009, were not disclosed. A five-time All-Star with the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League, the 31-year-old Mori compiled a 44-44 record with 50 saves and a 3.39 ERA in 431 appearances with the Lions. He struck out 755 batters in 653 innings. "Shinji Mori is a talented reliever who will add depth to our bullpen," said Andrew Friedman, the Devil Rays' executive vice president of baseball operations. "He's had a successful career in Japan, and we look forward to his continue success with the Devil Rays." |
