The Red Sox have a $5 million option for 2010 on the contract of Jason Varitek.

Ian Browne of MLB.com wrote on Thursday that Boston is unlikely to exercise the option, especially with Victor Martinez now in town.

Varitek has a $3 million player option, which could complicate things. The question remains whether he'll exercise the option knowing that his role will continue to decrease.
