Regardless of what happens in the offseason, the Cubs will likely give Jeff Samardzija another chance to make their starting rotation in 2010.

"Anything's possible," general manager Jim Hendry said. "He's thrown the ball real well. And if he can have a good finish, then he certainly might be in the mix to do that."

The hard-throwing right-hander struggled in two stints in the Cubs' bullpen this season but has pitched well as a starter for Class AAA Iowa (6-4, 3.53 ERA), including six scoreless innings Friday against Oklahoma City.

''People are going to be quite foolish if they think, 'Gee, he was up here and didn't do well,' and 'Gee, they talked him out of football,''' Hendry said. ''He's going to be really good. Sometimes it doesn't take much but a little tinker here and tinker there, and I think once he gets his feet on the ground and has a little success as a starter, he might take off.''

He's scheduled for at least one more start before rejoining the Cubs.
