Billy Wagner is staying with the Mets.

A league source told FOX Sports that the reliever will use his no-trade clause rather than accept a deal to the Red Sox.

Boston wouldn't meet both of Wagner's demands. He wanted assurance that they would decline his $8 million team option for 2010, which they provided.

However, the Sox wouldn't guarantee that they would decline to offer Wagner salary arbitration, making him a free agent without draft-pick compensation.

"It's not about the option or arbitration. It's about his desire to end the year healthy for the future," the source added.

"He feels he has a better chance lasting a month in a less competitive environment than perhaps two months in a pennant race and playoffs."
