The Brewers allowed former closer Dan Kolb to become a free agent Wednesday, two weeks after reacquiring the reliever from Atlanta. Milwaukee failed to offer the 29-year-old right-hander a contract by Tuesday's 11 p.m. CST deadline. The Brewers also didn't offer a contract to pitcher Jeff Bennett. Kolb had 60 saves for the Brewers in 2003 and 2004 with a 2.55 ERA, then was traded to Atlanta and was given the closer's job as John Smoltz's successor. But he quickly lost the job and went 3-8 with a 5.93 ERA and 11 saves in 65 appearances. Atlanta dealt the 29-year-old back to Milwaukee on Dec. 7 for right-hander Wes Obermueller.
