Jesse Litsch will undergo surgery Friday to repair a problem in his right elbow.

Litsch will visit famed doctor James Andrews and have the common "Tommy John" procedure (elbow ligament reconstructive surgery).

The normal recovery time for the procedure is a year to 18 months. Jays reliever B.J. Ryan returned from the same procedure in under a year.

"It was finalized (Monday)," Jays manager Cito Gaston said in Texas as the Jays prepared for a game against the Rangers.

"It (elbow) just kept bothering him. He went back to Florida, he visited Andrews twice ... you add up the months and it looks like he won't be back for Opening Day (2010), so that's not good news."
