On the air during a rain delay of Monday's ESPN Red Sox-Yankees telecast, Peter Gammons said that in their February interview, Alex Rodriguez "was as intense as anybody I've ever interviewed in my life." Gammons went on to say that the ESPN crew paused the interview so that Rodriguez could take a break and catch his breath. "We actually took a little water break in the middle because we were worried about him hyperventilating," Gammons said. Rodriguez gave the exclusive interview to Gammons shortly after details of Selena Roberts' new book were revealed, alleging that Rodriguez had taken performance-enhancing drugs. In the interview with Gammons, Rodriguez admitted to taking the drugs but said he had done so only for a limited time after signing with the Texas Rangers due to the pressure created by his record-breaking contract. Gammons did not address whether public perceptions of Rodriguez's veracity might have been affected had ESPN not given Rodriguez a break during the interview.
