David Ortiz, in between games of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader, was asked about Chamberlain's history of buzzing Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis. "He's a guy that, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everyone in the league so people don't get the wrong idea about him, because he's not a bad guy," Ortiz said. "When things like that happen, people get the wrong idea." Though Ortiz was offering advice to Chamberlain more than anything else, that didn't necessarily translate into some of the headlines or newscast segments that indicated that Big Papi was giving Chamberlain some type of big warning. Again, Ortiz was calm and matter-of-fact on Friday as he spoke about the situation, which has consisted of Chamberlain throwing four pitches high and tight on Youkilis between August 2007 and July 2008. "I don't really know what happened between [Chamberlain] and Youk," said Ortiz. "I don't think it's right if he threw on purpose at Youk. I don't think it's the right thing to do. At the end of the day, he's that kind of guy that, you know, people could get the wrong idea about him." |
