Carl Pavano, who was railed often during his time in New York, pitched very well against the Yankees on Sunday and left the game with a lead.

"He'd shown me plenty of toughness," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "If ever there was a day to have thick skin, today was the day. I told him this was his ballgame, he'd earned that."

Pavano struck out Nick Swisher in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded to preserve his lead, but the Yankees eventually won 7-3 after Cleveland's bullpen collapsed.

"It just says I feel a lot better than I did when I was with them," said Pavano. "I don't feel like I have to prove anything to the fans, to the people here. I have a great team behind me and I have their support and that's all I need."
