Gary Sheffield, as expected, cleared waivers on Thursday, and his agent had another conversation with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. about joining the Phillies.

However, there weren't any indications that a deal is imminent.

Agent Rufus Williams has said that "playing is important" to Sheffield.
