Angels general manager Tony Reagins met with the agent for pitcher John Lackey on Friday to discuss a contract extension.

Reagins said that the talks were "very, very preliminary," but an extension would keep Lackey from hitting the free agent market next winter.

The Angels opted to exercise the option year in Lackey's contract last fall and will pay him $10 million this season.
