Matt Cain hasn't had a history of the best conditioning, something the Giants have pressed on him over the years. He has come into Spring Training in much better shape this year.

"I don't think it was necessarily not doing the stuff, but it was taking it to the next level and maybe pushing it to a more intense regimen," Cain said. "That's what they wanted me to do. I think it's helped me a ton ... taking a little more pride in some of the sprints and some of the long-distance work.

"At some point, I think I was a little hard-headed about it because I was able to maybe get away with stuff and not go with the running as hard as I had done in the past years. I think I understood what it meant to go after it a little more. I definitely felt a big difference toward the end of the season."
