Omar Minaya now has options on Xavier Nady, along with a few extra dollars. Nady earned $1.138 million last season, thanks to an incentive-laden deal crafted by agent Scott Boras, but is not yet eligible for arbitration, so his only guarantee is to make at least 80 percent of that salary in 2006. While the Mets will gladly pocket the difference for their upcoming talks with free-agent closer Billy Wagner, who is scheduled to visit New York on Monday, what they will do with Nady remains to be seen. Minaya said Friday that he could be used at two positions: rightfield or in a platoon at first base with Mike Jacobs. Said the GM, "We just like the flexibility he gives us." Nady, 27, is known mostly for his potential because of limited playing time with the Padres, and Minaya is optimistic that he could flourish with more at-bats for the Mets. But there is another possibility. Minaya, who already is involved in trade discussions for numerous players, could use Nady as relatively cheap bait for a bigger fish. Nady could be included in a package for Carlos Delgado, Manny Ramirez or even Barry Zito.
