King Felix Avoids Arbitration

Jan 19, 2009 11:26 AM EST

Felix Hernandez, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time, signed a one-year contract worth $3.8 million with the Mariners.

The Mariners and the right-hander have explored multiyear deals over the last two offseasons but without success. Hernandez can't become a free agent until after the 2011 season.

RealGM Note: Hernandez was 81st in season FIC and 'deserved' to make $10M. He had a 3.45 ERA and struck out 175 batters in what was a bounce back season in some regards. He is still having difficulties from his command, which is separating him from the true elite.
