Catcher Jason Varitek and his agent Scott Boras wanted a deal similar to his four-year, $40 million pact that recently ended, but the Red Sox weren't interested.

It is now believed that Varitek and the Red Sox are discussing a shorter contract, according to a report in the Providence Journal.
