The Mets and Yankees likely will compete for several free agent relievers this winter as both teams reconstruct their bullpens, but they have slightly different roles in mind for flame-throwing righthander Kyle Farnsworth, whose agent has been contacted by both teams. The Yankees view Farnsworth, who is often clocked at 100 mph on the radar gun, as a potential setup man for closer Mariano Rivera. The Mets could use him as a setup man for Billy Wagner, if their dream closer scenario comes to pass, or they could use Farnsworth as part of a unique "two-headed closer" with lefty free agent B.J. Ryan if they fail to land Wagner and sign both Farnsworth and Ryan. A baseball official with knowledge of the Mets' plans said the Farnsworth-Ryan tandem is a Met backup plan. That would give the team two hard-throwing relievers, one righty and one lefty. If the Mets get Wagner, they could sign either Ryan or Farnsworth as a setup man. The two teams also might find themselves battling for lefty Scott Eyre, who was 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 86 games for the Giants last season. The Mets have been especially aggressive in courting Eyre, according to his agent, Tommy Tanzer, and executives already have asked for Eyre's phone number to contact him personally. Before leaving the GM meetings in California on Friday, Met GM Omar Minaya said he was "planning to" make an offer to Eyre.
