The average Major League Baseball player salary rose 3.6 percent in 2008 to $2.93 million, representing the lowest year-to-year increase since 2004.

The annual report on salaries by the Players Association was made public Thursday by The Associated Press, coming at a time when the downturn in global economics has been a hot topic of conversation.

The average figure, which is the lowest increase since salaries declined 2.5 percent from the 2003 to the 2004 seasons, still mirrors a healthy economic climate in Major League Baseball.
