New York's Hideki Matsui will not play in the 2009 World Baseball Classic in the wake of left knee surgery.

"He will not be playing," Yankees' GM Brian Cashman said in an e-mail. "Will not be ready."

Well-known Japanese players Ichiro Suzuki and Daisuke Matsuzaka have already declared their intentions to play.
