The chances of Ryan Dempster re-signing with the Cubs seemed to disappear as the chances of a trade for Jake Peavy increased, which could leave Chicago with addition money this offseason.

If the Cubs are able too land Peavy from the Padres soon, they could use the money they would have given to Dempster to sign someone like Bobby Abreu or Raul Ibanez.

The extra money could also help Chicago acquire Brian Roberts in a trade from Baltimore.
