Mariners' pitcher Erik Bedard is upbeat after having surgery on his shoulder and beginning rehab on Monday.

"The surgery was the best-case scenario, not the worst," Bedard said. "They cleaned up the fraying on my labrum and took out the cyst. I start rehab (today)."

Originally, the worst-case scenario for Bedard's shoulder surgery was a year-long recuperation that would keep him out of baseball until 2010.

"The worst-case scenario was I?d miss all next year," Bedard said.

"This was definitely the best possibility. I?ve been in a sling the last 11 days, and tomorrow I start working on range of motion."
