Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the top of first when Philadelphia's Brett Myers walked J.J. Hardy with the bases loaded. Myers steadied and didn't give up another run until the seventh inning, when Craig Counsell grounded out to second while Hardy raced home to score the final run of the game for the Brewers. Pedro Feliz doubled in the bottom of the second, scoring Jayson Werth, to tie the game. After Carlos Ruiz grounded out, moving Feliz to third, CC Sabathia walked both Myers and Jimmy Rollins to load the bases for Shane Victorino. Victorino then took the fourth pitch he saw into the left field bleachers, smacking a game-changing grand slam off of Sabathia. The Phillies wouldn't score again, but the five runs were all they needed to sweep the first two games of the series at Citizens Bank Park. Sabathia lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks. He also struck out five batters on 98 pitchers. Myers, after trouble in the first inning, went seven innings, allowing just two hits and three walks. He struck out four batters on 94 pitches to earn the win. Brad Lidge earned his second save of the series, throwing 12 pitches in a perfect ninth inning. Sabathia, who had pitched on three days rest three times while the Brewers fought for the NL Wild Card, hadn't allowed more than four runs in a start since Cleveland traded him to Milwaukee in the beginning of July. Thursday was also Sabathia's shortest outing, with his previous coming on Sept. 20 against Cincinnati when he lasted 5 2/3 innings in a loss. Game 3 will be Saturday at Miller Park in Milwaukee as the Brewers look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Phillies. Dave Bush is expected to start for the Brewers, and Jamie Moyer is slated for pitch for the Phillies. Moyer was 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in the regular season, while Bush went 9-10 with a 4.18 ERA. |
