Young Arms Coming Up Big for Minnesota
The puerile trio: Blackburn, Perkins, and Slowey had a rough start to the season but have since rebounded fantastically. In their last nine starts they are 5-2 with an outstanding 2.03 ERA.
2008 Season Preview: Minnesota Twins
For the Twins, this will be a transitional season that won't embarrass them before they move to their beautiful new ballpark in 2010 with an improve chance at competing.
The Little Piranhas Can Play
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen loves to speak his mind. Most of the time, his commentary is about ripping his own players, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, and others in major league baseball. He does have a soft spot for one team, which is the Minnesota Twins. He was raving about them prior to the White Sox/Twins game at the Metrodome on August 19th.
Morneau For MVP
The AL MVP winner should be awarded based on which player leads their team to a playoff berth. The Twins were not expected to do anything this season and with Liriano being out for the year, Morneau should be the MVP if he leads his team to a playoff berth. As great as David Ortiz has been, he cannot receive that award if his team does not make the playoffs, which will likely happen.
Good Riddance To Kyle Lohse
Most pitchers should be able to figure it out by the fourth year, but Kyle Lohse never could. It was a joke that Twins' GM Terry Ryan wanted him over Francisco Liriano in the rotation because he felt Liriano was not ready. Can Liriano be any worse than Lohse? What had Lohse done to earn Ryan’s faith even if he had potential? He simply did not deserve it.
Stewart's Tenure In Minnesota Comes To An Unfortunate End
Twins fans should be very thankful for the contributions of Shannon Stewart. He is the reason why the Twins made the playoffs in 2003 thanks to an awesome second half. They were sputtering offensively for the first few months of that season as they were falling apart players began pointing fingers at each other for the team’s problems.
Not A Bad First Half
The club is starting to become what Twins GM Terry Ryan envisioned in the off-season. If Twins fans have to evaluate the way this team has played all season, they have to be happy at what they have saw overall especially after the way their team started.
Baby Jesus Transforms Into An All-Star
KFAN’s afternoon drive-time sports talk show host Dan Barriero has mocked Joe Mauer as Baby Jesus because the Twin Cities media has been talking about how he is going to be the next best thing before he played a major league game. As derisive as it is, this nickname seems to fit in a way because he is carrying his hometown team to greatness this season.
Twins Young Hitters Have Finally Grown Up
Heading into the 2005 season, the Twins were predicted by some experts to win the World Series. They came out of the gates slow and were eventually buried in the Central Division by the White Sox and Indians. This year, the surprise team has been the Tigers, but the Twins are beginning to finally play to their potential.
This Season Has Been A Flop For The Twins
The Minnesota Twins talked a good game in the off-season about how they are a sleeper in the division and how they would do well with no pressure on them. Twins fans and the national and local media did not have any expectations on them this season. As a result, the team had the mentality of them versus the experts and their own fans.
Draft Process Right In Minnesota
When the 2001 draft rolled around and the Minnesota Twins held the number one overall pick. They were the surprise darlings of the early season and right before them was USC pitching prodigy Mark Prior. Instead, the Minnesota Twins took a high school catcher Joe Mauer and the calls of stupidity started flowing in.
The Small Market Twins Make Predictable Small Market Moves
Minnesota Twins GM Terry Ryan went into the offseason with a clear goal, to improve what was a dismal offense in 2005. It became almost painful last year watching a lineup that at points featured Terry Tiffee as the cleanup hitter. In what was already a weak free agent class, the Ryan was looking to sign a hidden gem or two under the radar for a bargain price.
Minnesota Playoff Hopes
Sitting 11 games back of Chicago in the Central Division, the only way to make those predictions come true is to overtake three teams and 4.5 games for a Wild Card berth. That classified this Kansas City series as a-must-win-and-sweep-if-possible situation.
Young Bats Struggling In Minnesota
Young hitters Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau were expected to lead this team from the plate this season and thus far, this hasn’t been the case.
