 Baltimore ? Pitcher Sydney Ponson didn?t speak with the media last night. After allowing nine hits, five walks and five runs through 5 1/3 innings, Chris Ray took over with bases loaded.
Rafael Palmeiro moved closer to reaching 3,000 hits. Last night he got two more for a total of 2,995. Palmeiro also hit 564th homer to surpass Reggie Jackson landing in ninth place on the all-time list.
If that was the highlight of the night, everything else was a struggle. In the fifth inning it appeared Miguel Tejada was on his way to tying the game with a home run. But that swing fell short and produced an out. Tejada?s frustration was visibly frustrated throwing his head back and shouting.
The Boston offered up strong hitting. Manny Ramirez drove in three runs. Overall the Red Sox totaled 15 hits. Johnny Damon went 4-for-5 and David Ortiz was 2-for-2 driving in two runs.
The Orioles have lost 12 of their last 15 games. They are now in third place in the AL East a half game behind the New York Yankees. Boston clinches their first place standing through the All-Star break for the first time in 10 years.
