Friday night?s bid against the Pittsburgh Pirates saw the Cardinals return to winning, halting a three-game skid.

Inexplicably, the Redbirds dropped 2 of 3 to Cincinnati. In Tuesday?s loss, the Reds pounded Jason Marquis, dropping his record to 8-5. He gave up 7 hits and 10 runs and was knocked out of the game after 2 1/3 innings. Cincinnati won handily 11-4. Wednesday?s game did nothing to help the slumping Mark Mulder who looked awful in the 7-6 loss to the Reds. He is now 8-5 and is 2-4 in his last six starts. His last win was against the awful Tampa Bay Devil Rays ? hardly a source of comfort for anxious Cardinal fans. It is clear that Mulder is struggling with his location and has failed to deliver a dominant performance since early in the season. Cardinal Nation waits nervously for Mark Mulder to pitch up to his capabilities. Thursday night?s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates saw Matt Morris lose his first game this season. He was quite hittable as his record moved to 8-1. The Bucs pounded the Cards 11-7.

Friday night the Cardinals won convincingly, evening the series 1-1. Home cooking helped Jeff Suppan deliver one of his strongest performances of the season. He gave up 5 hits and one run while Jim Edmonds hit two two-run homeruns and So Taguchi joined the act, hitting two out of Busch Stadium. Suppan is now 7-6. Cardinal fans hope that Suppan is back on the winning pace he set last season, notching a 16-9 record.

Saturday?s game features the Cardinals best pitcher, Chris Carpenter (10-4) against Mark Redman (4-5). Game time is 6:15 in a steamy St. Louis.
