Last night?s game featured many highlights for Cardinals fans. Most notably, Matt Morris? complete game limiting the Red Sox to one run.
Matty Mo was the picture of efficiency, the complete opposite of his Game 2 World Series appearance that resulted in a 6-2 loss for the Redbirds. Morris pitched like a man possessed last night. He also executed a flawless squeeze bunt to help himself on the offensive side. It was clear he wanted a win. Morris was quoted by local reporters that he could not wait to pitch against the Red Sox.
Any worries about a Cardinal World Series flashback were squashed as the team played its most complete game of the season. The defense was superb and there was timely hitting at the bottom of the lineup.
Former Cardinal Edgar Renteria was greeted with a strange combination of boos and applause. And almost as if the fans were embarrassed by the boo birds, they continued to cheer and eventually gave Renteria an ovation. The mixed reception aside, Edgar graciously acknowledged the applause.
However, his night on the field was dismal. He was 0-4 and booted a ball by Matt Morris, extending the 9th inning for new shortstop David Eckstein. D-Eck proceeded to get a huge hit and cement the victory. It was clear that the Cardinals had marked this game on their calendars.
Notes: Scott Rolen took batting practice yesterday and reported no pain. His return is still unknown. |
