 If there was any doubt as to who is the stronger team in the World Series, it was answered on Tuesday night before the mid-point of Game One.
For all of the Rockies' surge to tie for the Wild Card with 13 wins in their last 14, to coming from behind to beat the Padres in a one-game Wild Card playoff, to a sweep of the Phillies in the LDS and a sweep of the Diamondbacks in the LCS, they were sent a statement in Game 1: The Buck Stops in Boston.
Not wasting any time, the Red Sox scored 13 earned runs before the end of the fifth inning. Combined with Josh Beckett asserting himself as one of the best pitchers of this dwindling decade, the Rockies really had no chance right out of the gate.
Surely, Colorado can rebound with a win on Thursday night, but they will be facing Curt Schilling, one of the best money pitchers of the last fifteen years. Should they lose that game, the Rockies are faced with having to win two out of three at Coors field just to have the right to go back to Boston, where the Red Sox have been all but invincible.
Anti-climatically, the magic that led the Rockies to 21 wins in their last 22 games might finally be running out. Their week long layoff after their sweep of Arizona probably didn't help. But the Rockies are facing a Boston team that is firing on all cylinders after a convincing final three games of the LCS in which they outscored the Cleveland Indians 30-5.
As predicted, Manny Ramirez lead the way for the Red Sox, with three hits and two RBI in four trips to the plate. David Ortiz also had three hits and two RBI amidst Boston's 17 hits in Game 1. Of note, Ramirez was hitting .400 with 14 RBI in 10 postseason games BEFORE Game 2's blowout. |
